Base

Base

This is the material, or combination of materials, that forms the foundation of a system. Hair is added to the base to create a hair system.

POLYURETHANE

Often abbreviated to “PU”, this thin, flexible base material is used for solid bases or around a system’s perimeter. Very thin polyurethane may be referred to as “skin”.

POLYURETHANE WITH GAUZE

PU reinforced with threads of gauze, enabling hair to be tied into it. This is one of the most preferred types of PU as it is thin yet durable.

POLYURETHANE WITH SILK

PU reinforced with silk, enabling hair to be tied into it. It is a thin yet strong material.

POLYURETHANE WITH
STRETCH NYLON

PU reinforced with a stretchable nylon stocking material, enabling hair to be tied into it. The nylon gives the system flexibility and longevity.

CLEAR POLYURETHANE

Without gauze or mesh for knotting, this is the clearest yet most delicate form of PU. It is extremely light and natural-looking. Clear polyurethane densities include: ultra-light grade, extra light grade, light grade, and a graduated grade that transitions from ultra-light to light grade.

POLYURETHANE-COATED

Also known as poly-coated, this is the most durable PU and often used along a hair system’s perimeter and at the tape tabs/patches for bonding.

SWISS LACE

A delicate, pliable lace material for a natural-looking appearance. It is primarily used to create lace front hairlines and breathable center base areas. When worn with special adhesive, it is almost undetectable.

FINE MONO

Also known as M mesh, this nylon mesh base material is the preferred material for durability. It has a finished edge of either polyurethane or ribbon, or it is folded and stitched. Fine mono will fray without this finished edge. This material cannot be attached with adhesives.

FINE WELDED MONO & SUPER FINE WELDED MONO

This fine or super fine welded monofilament base material has excellent contour capabilities and needs no finished edge. It is primarily used to create lace front hairline and breathable center base areas. It is more durable than Swiss lace.

material components

ANTI-SLIP

A rubbery silicone material that is much softer than PU and does not yellow over time. Anti-slip works with the body’s heat to cling to the scalp. Anti-slip cannot be bonded.

SINGLE SILK MONO

Silk-like material is smooth against the skin. Lightweight and sheer with a natural appearance. Ideal for sensitive scalps.

STABILIZING THREADS

Added to Swiss lace areas to help structure the system’s contour and shape.

SWISS STRETCH NET

A delicate, stretch material for comfort and a natural appearance.

WORKING MATERIAL

Excess material with no hair at the front of the hair system, also known as or unvented. This excess material allows technician to affix the product safely to a canvas block head for styling or other customization processes.

Hair

VENTILATION/VENTED/ VENTING METHOD

Process used to attach hair to a system with either knotting or V-looping.

KNOTS/KNOTTED/KNOTTING

This term refers to how the hair is tied/vented onto the base material.

INVISIBLE KNOTS

Hair tied to the base is virtually invisible and appears to be growing directly from scalp. Also known as bleached or colorless knots.

MICRO KNOTS

The hair is attached to the system with a very small knot, resembling natural hair growth.

V-LOOPED

Hair is inserted into the base and brought back through. The base is then sealed with polyurethane to secure the hair. There are no knots, giving a natural appearance.

UNDER-VENTED

Also known as under-venting, hair is sewn along the underneath side of the system to hide the edge.

FREESTYLE™

Hair is vented into the base in a way that allows it to be combed or parted in any direction, much like bio hair. Freestyle hair allows you to change the part to the right, left or center.

BIO HAIR

This term refers to a client’s own natural hair.

DENSITY

Refers to the number of hairs inserted into a hair system. Ranges from extra light to extra heavy.

HUMAN HAIR

All American Hairlines systems are made with 100% fine quality human hair.

REMY HUMAN HAIR

This subtype of human hair is aligned with the hair all going in the same direction to emulate natural hair growth.

EASTERN EUROPEAN
HUMAN HAIR

A specialty type of Remy human hair with a silky texture. Our 100% Eastern European Human Hair systems have the cuticle intact. “Eastern European” denotes genetics rather than geography. The hair structure is finer, flatter, smoother, and more desirable. Our exclusive Eastern European hair has undergone a slow color lift process to maintain the hair’s integrity.

types of Hair systems

system

Short for “hair system”. Also referred to as a unit, toupee, hairpiece, topper, top-of-head or graft. American Hairlines offers top-of-head, ¾ cap and full wigs systems.

top-of-head

This is the smallest type of hair system. Our most popular size is 8×10 inches, however American Hairlines offers various base options to accommodate a client’s coverage needs.

INTEGRATION

This type of hair system is also known as a pull-through base or open-base. The system is integrated with the client’s own hair to create fullness.

¾ CAP

The size of this hair system falls between a top-of-head and a full wig.

FULL WIG

This size hair system covers the entire scalp.

bonding

NON-SURGICAL
HAIR REPLACEMENT

Hair systems that do not require a client with hair loss to undergo any kind of surgical procedure.

BONDING

A process by which a hairpiece is affixed to a client’s scalp.

PERIMETER BONDING

The outer edge of the system is adhered to the client’s shaved hair.

FULL HEAD BONDING

The entire system is adhered to the client’s scalp.

OPEN FUSION TECHNOLOGY™

American Hairlines’ patent-pending design. The client’s hair is drawn through fusion points around the system perimeter.
